AMDA Graduates Win Big at the 2023 Tony Awards!

Congratulations to AMDA Graduates and 2023 Tony Award Winners  J. Harrison Ghee, Caissie Levy, and Emilio Ramos!

The 76th Tony Awards took place Sunday, June 11, 2023 at the United Palace in New York City. 

J. Harrison Ghee '09 made history as the first nonbinary actor to win a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical as Jerry/Daphne in Broadway’s Some Like It Hot

Broadway: Some Like It Hot (Jerry/Daphne), Mrs. Doubtfire (Andre Mayem), and Kinky Boots (Lola). TV/Film: Netflix’s Raising Dion (Kwame), Fox’s Accused (Robyn), HBO’s High Maintenance (Carl). Entertainment/Cruise: Tokyo Disney and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Caissie Levy '04 starred as Eva in Broadway’s Leopoldstadt, which won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Play. 

Broadway: Leopoldstadt (Eva), Caroline, or Change (Rose Stopnick Gellman), Frozen (Elsa), Ghost (Molly), Hair (Sheila), Wicked (Elphaba), Les Misérables (Fantine), and Hairspray (Penny). Off-Broadway: The Bedwetter (Beth Ann), Murder Ballad (Sara), and First Daughter Suite (Patti Davis/Julie Nixon). National Touring: Wicked (Elphaba), Hairspray (Penny), and Rent (Maureen). West End: Next to Normal (Diana Goodman), Ghost (Molly), and Hair (Sheila).

Emilio Ramos '13 serves as the Associate Director of Broadway’s Parade, winner of the 2023 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. 

Broadway: The Light in the Piazza (Associate Director, NYCC), Parade (Associate Director), A Christmas Carol (Associate Director), West Side Story (Swing), and The King and I (Ensemble). Off-Broadway: Titanique (Assistant Director) and West Side Story at Carnegie Hall (Baby John). National Touring: Miss Saigon (Swing), The King and I (Swing, u/s Simon, Angel/George), and West Side Story (Chino). Regional: The Muny, Houston Grand Opera, Ogunquit Playhouse, The Ordway, and ZACH Theatre.
