Celebrating Black History Month
Throughout February the library will be celebrating Black History Month and acknowledging the achievements of African Americans in history, culture, and arts. The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, when historian Carter G. Woodson and clergyman Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month and called upon all citizens to “seize the opportunity to honor the too often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout history.”
Please visit the library during Black History Month and view our bulletin board and book displays. We have many African American resources, including reference books, biographies, plays, songbooks, CDs, and DVDs. You can study Slavery in America, the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Black Power Movement.
On the weekends of February 3-4, 17-18, and 24-25, we will be showing films which feature Black directors, actors, and stories. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy African American performing arts!
