Oscars Mania: Wings

The 90th Annual Oscar Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 4. Enjoy the televised show—and enjoy both winning and losing films in the library.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a long and interesting history. The first awards were given for the year 1927/28, when the Oscar for Outstanding Picture went to Wings, a story about the First World War starring Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers, Richard Arlen, and Gary Cooper. This silent, black and white film has been fully restored from decaying negatives, and the original music score was re-orchestrated at Skywalker Sound. The film was re-released by Paramount Pictures in 2012. You can find a copy on the library shelves.
