AMDA PERFORMING ARTS LIBRARY - SPRING 2018, WEEK 7 50th Anniversary of Hair

March 29, 2018 - Announcements

April 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, which opened on Broadway in 1968 and ran for nearly 2,000 performances. A defining musical of its time, Hair explored sex, drugs, and anti-war politics. Many of the songs—including “Aquarius” and “Let the Sun Shine In”—are still popular today. A new production of Hair will open at the Palace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles later this month.

The library has variety of resources for the study and enjoyment of this landmark musical, including a DVD of the motion picture and a documentary DVD with interviews and rehearsal footage. There are six CDs, including original Broadway cast, original London cast, original soundtrack, and new Broadway cast recordings. The songs can be found in a vocal selections book with lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. Also check out two books, Let the Sun Shine In: The Genius of Hair by Scott Miller and The Theater Will Rock: A History of the Rock Musical from Hair to Hedwig by Elizabeth L. Wollman.
