Douglas Nyback Transitions from Syfy's “Defiance” to “Hell on Wheels”

When your character dies after a firefight while trying to blow up a nuclear power station, it’s usually safe to assume you won’t be returning to the show. Not the case for AMDA alum Douglas Nyback, who, despite his brutal demise as Ben Daris on SyFy’s “Defiance” returned to play the recurring role Sgt. Frei Poole for the show’s final two seasons. Appropriately, gruesome death proved only a temporary deterrent for the committed actor: Nyback’s impressive versatility—as well as some pretty trippy alien prosthetics— made his unlikely return possible. From a young age, AMDA alumna Rosa Alicia (Azuara Hernandez) Delain knew she was destined for the theatre. After every show that her mother took her to see, she would return home to re-enact each scene. Making a Difference

When Jesse Karlan was seven years old, her best friend was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a degenerative lung and digestive disease. Jesse immediately took action at a young age and created a musical revue, Sing For A Cure, to raise money for cystic fibrosis research. She then sold tickets to her revue, along with three CDs she recorded at Universal Music, in order to raise money toward finding a cure. Today, you can find Jesse’s songs on iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster, with all proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Since her first performance of Sing For A Cure, she has raised over $100,000. [more]

Tyne Daly's Newest Broadway Offering

AMDA alumna Tyne Daly returns to Broadway this coming March—in a musical, once again. And as a domineering mother, once again. It Shoulda Been You, directed by Tony Award-winner David Hyde Pierce, is scheduled to open April 14, 2015, at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Gypsy marked Daly's last musical on Broadway, garnering her a 1990 Tony Award for her portrayal of Mama Rose, the stage mother to end all stage mothers. In between then and now, Daly has performed in four Broadway plays: The Seagull, Rabbit Hole (Tony nomination), Master Class and Mothers and Sons. [more]

Rush to See Gretchen Mol in 'Disgraced'

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play Disgraced, by Ayad Akhtar, opens next Thursday, October 23, at the Lyceum Theatre, with a limited number of rush tickets sold on the day of each performance. Alumnus Ray Fisher cast as Cyborg in upcoming Batman vs.Superman film!

AMDA alumnus Ray Fisher was just announced to play the role of Cyborg in the upcoming Warner Bros. film Batman vs. Superman! The sequel to 2013's Man of Steel features a cast of A-list stars including Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams and Jesse Eisenberg. Cyborg (whose not-so-secret identity is Victor Stone) is a half man/half machine superhero and member of the Justice League in the DC Comics series on which the film is based. The film will be the first in a series of films planned around the Justice League characters, landing Ray the potential to be featured in many more films to come. Alumnus Nathan Reid forms Reinventing Films and Produces "The Jokester" film series

Nathan Reid, an AMDA graduate, has been acting, writing, and producing films for over 10 years. In 2004, Nathan wrote and sold his first script, Snowman Assassin. In 2005, he executive produced and starred in his first film Old Man Music, starring Geoffrey Lewis and J.A. Preston, which won the Gold Metal for Excellence at the Park City Music Festival and various other awards of recognition. In 2008, Nathan created Prey: The Beginning; a comic book franchise. The first issue was listed #3 in the top ten sales ranking for Independent comics. In 2013, Nathan formed Reinventing Films with producing partner Jodie Bentley, and then merged with Moving Pictures Media Group in early 2014. RF and MPMG have slates of films in all stages of production and look forward to their growing partnership. [more]

AMDA Alumna Theresa Murray Talks About Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival

In the last two years, AMDA alumnae Theresa Murray and Julie Furrer both received full scholarships to dance with the esteemed Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. The festival takes place every summer in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts and it is recognized worldwide as a "hub and mecca of dancing" (TIME Magazine). It offers training to dancers with the opportunity to interact and work with top dance companies and choreographers, over 200 free performances, speakers and a range of events. Dance icon, Mikhail Baryshnikov, called it "one of America's most precious cultural assets." The Jacob's Pillow website states, " 'The Pillow' is a treasured 220-acre National Historic Landmark, a recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Arts, and home to America's longest-running international dance festival." AMDA congratulates alumna Kelly McCormack an internationally nominated screenwriter opening one of the most prestigious music and film festivals on her first film out of the box! Kelly's new film PLAY will have its  World Premiere at the Williamsburg International Film Festival  selected as the Opening Night Gala Feature film on Sept 19th. The film will also screen at the TriBeCa Film Centre in the Bootleg Film Festival on Sept 20th. We were thrilled to catch up with our recent AMDA alumna Gabriela Garcia who has been a very busy lady since graduating with her BFA in Acting from AMDA in Fall 2012. Gabriela is currently the reigning Miss Tarzana (a city suburb of Los Angeles) and will soon be leaving to compete for the Miss California title. She will also be starting at USC this fall where she will be working toward her MFA degree. Congratulations to AMDA alumna Becca Tobin who joins the cast of "Glee" on Fox TV as Kitty, the newest cheerleader! Becca is from Marietta, Georgia. She too was a cheerleader in middle school before she went on to study dance. When alumnus Michael Ian Cedar graduated from AMDA he took a part in the National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof. After his initial elation and 10 performances in, Michael walked into the Company Manager’s office and declared “I’m not sure this gig is for me, how do I learn how to do your job”? Michael was offered the Assistant Manager position and says he felt like Dori in Finding Nemo, completely oblivious but utterly in his element. Michael is now a successful producer at StarQuest International and is also producing a concert of Mercy Street through his own production company Ask Yourself Productions. [more]

Cabaret and Charity with Marti Gould Cummings

AMDA alumnus Marti Gould Cummings is a New York cabaret performer who has quickly made a name for himself. He currently hosts four shows a week in the city, bringing in some of the most sought after Broadway Stars as guests. After Proposition 8 was passed in California (a ballot proposition elimating the rights of same sex couples to marry), Marti co-founded the organization Broadway Speaks OUT to create a forum for those on Broadway to speak out on behalf of the LGBT community. Marti has interviewed a bevy of stars for Broadway Speaks OUT including Bette Midler and Rosie O'Donnell, and has produced and hosted several successful fundraisers. In a relatively short period of time on the scene, Marti has carved out a successful career for himself. AMDA salutes alumna Jo Jo Graham who is the Founding Executive Director of Dancing Classrooms in Northeast Ohio. Jo Jo was hired by Dancing Classrooms in NYC during her 4th semester at AMDA six years ago. She quickly found success within the non-profit organization which brings dance into elementary and middle school classrooms around the country. Jo Jo worked her way up to launch a new branch of Dancing Classrooms in Northeast Ohio (her hometown), now in its fourth year of success! In addition to her role as Executive Director for Dancing Classrooms Northeast Ohio, Jojo is also the Director of the Dancing Classrooms Weekend Academy and was also recognized as Teacher of the Year, for her work within the classroom. Victoria Mallory and Kurt Peterson Reunite for "When Everything Was Possible" April 29th in NYC!

AMDA alumni Victoria Mallory and Kurt Peterson met while attending AMDA New York in the 1960's.  In the summer of 1968 Victoria and Kurt were cast, from hundreds of hopefuls, by Leonard Bernstein and Richard Rodgers, as Maria and Tony in the first major revival of West Side Story at Lincoln Center. Both went on to have phenomenal careers and their story has become that of Broadway legend. [more]

AMDA congratulates graduate Renee Barnett (2006), co-founder of the New York Children’s Theater Festival which will kick off in April in NYC! The new festival, created to celebrate and promote the art of children’s theater, will premiere on April 20 and run through May 5 at The Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater in Manhattan. Go Green! It is no mystery why Wicked is one of the most popular musicals in history, going strong on Broadway for nine years, on London’s West End for five years, with five additional North American seated productions, including two national tours currently crisscrossing the country, as well as several international productions in Japan, Germany and Australia. Wicked has won over 35 major awards, including three Tony Awards and a Grammy Award, with Entertainment Weekly declaring it “The Best Musical of the Decade” and Variety concurring that it is “a cultural phenomenon.” AMDA has had eleven alumni perform in Wicked thus far. AMDA salutes faculty member Robert Manning Jr. for his upcoming debut in Magic/Bird on Broadway. Robert will play the multiple roles of Michael Cooper, Henry Alvarado and Frank. Kathleen Burgoon Performs on the High Seas!

AMDA alumna Kathleen Burgoon graduated from the Integrated Conservatory program in Los Angeles in fall 2010. Congratulations to our six AMDA alumni who will perform as supernumeraries (non-singing ensemble) in the prestigious Verdi masterpiece Simon Boccanegra, starring the legendary Placido Domingo, at the LA Opera. AMDA graduates Matt Jennings Turner, Anton Fair (Schwaegerle), Reid Boutte, Russell Williams, Ben Gould and Barrett Hill will perform in several intricate stage combat sequences throughout the opera, under the fight direction of AMDA's own faculty Charles Currier. AMDA Salutes Alum Robert Merante for his Award-winning Dance Company and Upcoming Community Theatre!

After graduating AMDA, alumnus Robert Merante (hired for his first professional show a month before graduation, leaving for rehearsal a week after graduation) worked professionally in the theatre community for about five years steady. He toured Korea as well as the U.S., and did shows in several regional theaters. After living out of a suitcase for all that time, Robert discovered his true passion at his friend’s dancing school, and that was teaching. He gradually went from being a master class teacher at the studio to running their dance program and competition team. In time, he knew it was time to take the plunge and open his own dancing school. Kristin Towers-Rowles' Starring Second Act

Kristin Towers-Rowles grew up in Los Angeles amidst a family of actors and singers. Her grandmother is the MGM Musical actress/singer Kathryn Grayson (Kiss Me Kate, Showboat, Anchors Away, and Camelot on Broadway). Her grandfather, Johnnie Johnston, was the star of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on Broadway and was a popular recording artist in the 1940's. Kristin’s mother grew up the child of these two stars and was a great actress/singer in her own right. Her parents met when her father, Robert Towers, was playing Snoopy in the LA Production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown at the Ivar Theatre, right down the street from AMDA LA. Mr. Towers has acted in hundreds of plays and musicals and has been in many TV Shows and Films. Notably he played the older Benjamin in the film The Curious Case Benjamin Button. [more]

AMDA Alumni Meet, Marry And Form Their Own Production Company For Charity!

AMDA alumni Michael Scott King (2004) and Mariya Tsekalo King (2005) both graduated AMDA but did not know one another while in school. They met after graduation at an alumni audition for a weekend of Tennessee Williams plays. Two and a half months later they were engaged, and two years later they started their own production company, Nunya Productions. Michael and Mariya had not only a love for acting in common, but also found a similar history of addiction and recovery. Finding their way through serious difficulties in their own lives, they have made it their mission to give back by donating funds from all of their productions to non-profit organizations in need. For their next event, Nunya will stage the new version of Neil LaBute’s Some Girls for the first time in NYC. The show will debut December 8th at the American Theatre of Actors' Sargent Theatre (314 W. 54th Street). We spoke to the couple to find out how they made their own dream into a reality. [more]

Alumni Jennifer Garza Finds Her Voice and Yours!

Jennifer Garza graduated from the AMDA NYC Integrated program in Spring 2008. Upon graduation, Jennifer realized her passion was in voice and speech work. She traveled to London to continue her studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama at the University of London, while also teaching Shakespeare, phonetics, accents and voice and speech at several local colleges. After receiving her MFA, Jennifer has returned to NYC and is now teaching and consulting privately with actors who want further VPS training, accent/dialect work, or monologue coaching. She specializes in Shakespearean speech. AMDA students might recognize her from some of their warm-ups in Joe Goscinski’s VPS classes. Frank Francisco Stars In The First Production of "Rent" In The Dominican Republic!

Frank Francisco, an AMDA Fall 2010 graduate, recently landed one of his dream roles playing the part of Angel in the first production of RENT to be performed in the Dominican Republic. Frank is excited to return to his hometown of Santo Domingo, DR, where he lived until the age of 14.  The show will be performed at El Palacio de Bellas Artes (The Palace of Fine Arts), one of the most prestigious theatres on the island, a breathtaking and magical theatre that Frank recalls being just out of reach when he was young. Well within his reach now, RENT will open for the first time in Santo Domingo on November 11th. Frank will take the stage alongside several Dominican celebrities such as Javier Gurllon and Dominican rock singer Tony Almont from “Toque Profundo.” [more]

Melissa Johnston finds Theatre & Film Alive and Flourishing in Detroit

Melissa Johnston graduated from AMDA in 2009. Since then she has appeared in the feature films Barely Legal (just released on DVD), and Water for Elephants. Recently Melissa moved back to her hometown of Detroit, Michigan so she could be close to her ailing grandmother. She has been working steadily in regional theatre in the city, acting in two plays, Caught Up, a family drama, and The Corridor, an urban drama about addiction. The latter is a trilogy of plays that has a matching set of films that go into production early next year. She is also acting for Made in Peril Productions, which produces superhero short films, and works as the spokesmodel for Rink Warriors, a company that hosts roller derby events. [more]

AMDA Salutes Faculty Member and Music Director Jay Dias!

Congratulations to AMDA faculty member Jay Dias! Jay has been hard at work restoring the original orchestrations for Gypsy at the Lyric Stage in Dallas, featuring a 39 piece orchestra playing the full orchestrations for the first time since the original Broadway production starring Ethel Merman ended in 1961. The rave reviews for Gypsy are now coming in droves (see below) and Jay has been honored by the Dallas Fort Worth Theatre Critics Forum as the Best of the 2010-'11 Season: Jay Dias as Outstanding Creative Contribution as Music Director for his 2010-'11 season work with Lyric Stage. A "Hairspray" Q&A with AMDA Alums Chyka Jackson and Daniel LeClaire

On August 5, 6 & 7th, the Hollywood Bowl’s production of Hairspray reunited the original Broadway stars Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur (1992 Graduate) in their Tony Award winning roles as mother Edna Turnblad and daughter Tracy Turnblad. The star studded cast also included the well known talents of Drew Carey, Corbin Bleu, John Stamos and Nick Jonas. Alums take 3D Hamlet to Edinburgh Festival Fringe!

AMDA’s own Katrina Denney, former AMDA student and current Associate Director of Library Services & Chief Librarian at AMDA, is also managing director for the Fundamental Theater Project in NYC. Katrina is currently working with AMDA alum Sam Underwood who is starring as Hamlet, and fellow alum Jon McCormick, in the FTP’s new work 3D Hamlet: A Lost Generation. 3D Hamlet is an 80 minute distillation of the classical Hamlet text with an innovative overlay of multimedia and features a rotating cast of highly established and emerging talent. The show also guest stars Anthony Rapp (Rent –Broadway and Film), Scott Adsit ("30 rock") and features special on screen appearances from Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), Michael Emerson ("Lost"), Richard Eastman and Meg Gibson. British actor Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral) will also take a turn as Polonius for one night in Edinburgh. [more]

Nina Arianda's Take Two on Broadway

AMDA Alum Nina Arianda will reprise her critically acclaimed role as Vanda in Venus in Fur when it debuts on Broadway this Fall. Arianda, recently nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal of Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday, originated the role of Vanda in the show’s off-Broadway world premiere in January of 2010. Mark McDaniels Talks "Show Choir!-The Musical"

AMDA alum Mark McDaniels and his writing partner Don Garverick wrote the new musical Show Choir! – The Musical in 2006, a comedic musical documentary that follows The Symphonic Sensations from their small town show choir to big time showbiz success with an explosion of tight harmonies and jazz hands. Show Choir! has had successful runs at the 2007 NY Fringe Festival, where they were the winner of two awards for Overall Excellence, and last year’s New York Music Festival (NYMF). Mark and Don were also honored at the 2010 York Theatre's NEO (New, Emerging, Outstanding) Concert celebrating new musical theatre writers in NYC. More recently, Show Choir! was picked up by The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and will be presented in workshop at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival throughout the month of August. Tyne Daly Stars in Master Class on Broadway

AMDA alumna and Tony Award Winner, Ms. Tyne Daly will star as opera diva Maria Callas in the Broadway revival of Terrence McNally’s Master Class. Previews begin on June 14th with the official opening on July 7th at the Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Master Class was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play in 1996. Inspired by an actual master class given by Ms. Callas at the Julliard School, MTC describes "Terrence McNally's play about Maria Callas (Tyne Daly) takes us to one of her famous master classes, where, late in her own career, she dares the next generation to make the same sacrifices and rise to the same heights that made her the most celebrated, the most reviled and the most controversial singer of her time." Jason Wise Lands the Role He Was Destined For

Growing up in a small town in upstate New York, 10 year old Jason Wise saw a TV commercial that would change his life. It was for a touring production of Cats, and he was hooked. After begging his mother for tickets, she relented and Jason was able to go. Afterward, he approached a cast member outside the stage door, letting him how badly he wanted to be in show business. CLIFFORD BANAGALE IS GOING TO CANNES

LA Alum Clifford Bangale (Integrated Program 2006) will be attending the premiere of “Busong.” The movie is the centerpiece of the Director’s Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival. Clifford stars as Aris in the movie reported to be the first film ever made in Palawan, a language spoken by native Filipinos on the island of the same name. But you may crack up when you remember him from his quirky role as Diesel, the lover of Sacha Baron Cohen in the movie “Bruno.” He’s also shared the stage with Alfred Molina and Tony Shalhoub in “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Pasadena Playhouse. Jason Derülo Recording Sophmore Album

OMG Music reported that 2006 AMDA Graduate Jason Derülo is currently in the studio working on his 2nd album. Jason said he will record the bulk of the album in January 2011 and it should drop sometime during the summer.
